With the wide coverage of Suicide of Rohit Vemula and the subsequent political storm, University of Hyderabad Vice-Chancellor P. Appa Rao, has gone on leave but the students continued their protest on the campus. Vipin Srivastava, the senior-most professor, will perform the duties of the vice-chancellor, the university announced on Sunday. Prof Srivastava, from the Department of Physics, was the chairman of the committee that recommended punishment for the five students. The protesting students also claimed that he had earlier faced allegations of having harassed a Dalit student from Salem, Senthil Kumar, a research scholar at the physics department who committed suicide in 2008

Mr. Rao was under fire for his handling of the issue relating to the suspension of five Dalit students, one of whom, Vemula, committed suicide on January 17. Meanwhile, the university registrar also issued orders on Sunday with regard to revocation of suspension of four students.
The executive council on Thursday had decided to revoke the suspension. The students, however, continued their protest demanding Mr. Rao’s ouster.
We have to wait and see how the students respond on being appointed Prof Srivastava as VC who is one way responsible for the suicide.
