No Special Status to Andhra Pradesh

After a high voltage drama continued for almost several hours at Vijayawada and Delhi, finally, the Union finance minister Mr. Arun Jaitely late on Wednesday said that the Centre has decided to provide AP a ‘Special Assistance Measure’ that would actual be equivalent to the benefits if the AP state would have had got if the special status was granted.

The partial list of the Special Assistance constitutes a financial package that included full funding of the Polavaram irrigation project, tax concessions and special assistance to the state. The state will also get a railway zone, and its headquarters would be decided by the railway minister whether in Vijayawada or Visakhapatnam. Speaking to the media past 10.30 pm in Delhi, Jaitley told the media that more details of the package would be announced on Thursday. Mr. Jaitley also added that every assurance given in the AP Reorganization Act would definitely be implemented by the BJP ruled Centre. The special arrangements will continue for a duration of Five years. Before the announcement, Venkaiah Naidu called the AP CM Chandrababu to Delhi and participate in the package discussion but Naidu politely refused his request and made him clear that unless the center fulfill the 9 major demands

While the discussions were going on, Mr Venkaiah Naidu called the AP Chief Minister over phone and asked him to come to Delhi to discuss the package. The Chief Minister replied that unless the Centre agreed to the nine main demands of the state government, he would not go to the nation’s capital city. Things to get more clarity only by Thursday.
